OnJan.9,theFishandWildlifeService(FWS),theInteriorDepartmentagencythatevaluatesendangeredspecies,wasduethatdaytodeliveritsrulingonthepolarbear.ThoughFWShadalreadytakenoverayeartoinvestigatethepolarbear'splight—greengroupssuedthefederalgovernmenttwoyearsagotodeclaretheanimalasthreatenedundertheEndangeredSpeciesAct—thedaybeforethedeadline,theagencyannouncedthatitwouldneedanothermonthtodecide,duetothecomplexityofthebear'ssituation.

　　Thatsituationisasfollows:Astemperatureswarm,theArcticseaicethatsupportsthepolarbearshrinks,leavingtheanimalstodrownastheyareforcedtoswimlongdistancesbetweentheice,orsimplystarvetodeath.
