PrehistoryintheareabeganwiththegeologicalformationofthepeculiarterritoryofwhatistodayNewYorkCity.TheareawaslonginhabitedbytheLenape;LenapeincanoesmetGiovannidaVerrazzano,thefirstEuropeanexplorertoenterNewYorkHarbor,in1524.GiovannidaVerrazzanonamedthisplaceNewAngoulêmeinthehonoroftheFrenchkingFrancisI.EuropeansettlementbeganwiththefoundingoftheDutchfurtradingsettlementinLowerManhattanin1613latercalledNewAmsterdam(NieuwAmsterdam)inthesoutherntipofManhattanin1624.Laterin1626,PeterMinuitestablishedalongtraditionofshrewdrealestateinvestingwhenhepurchasedManhattanIslandandStatenIslandfromnativepeopleinexchangefortradegoods.(Legend,nowlongdisproved,hasitthattheislandwaspurchasedfor$24worthofglassbeads.)Minuit'ssettlementwasalsoahavenforHuguenotsseekingreligiousliberty.
In1640,PeterStuyvesantwasappointedgovernor,andruledasamemberoftheDutchReformedChurch.Hecurtailedthecity'sreligiousfreedomsandclosedallofthecity'staverns.Thecolonywasgrantedself-governmentin1652.In1664,theBritishconqueredtheareaandrenameditNewYork.TheDutchregaineditinAugust1673,renamingthecity"NewOrange",beforecedingNewNetherlandpermanentlytotheEnglishforwhatisnowSurinaminNovember1674.
