Avolunteerissomeonewhoworksforacommunityorforthebenefitofnaturalenvironmentprimarilybecausetheychoosetodoso.ThewordcomesfromLatin,andcanbetranslatedas"will"(asindoingsomethingoutofonesownfreewill).Manyservethroughanon-profitorganization–sometimesreferredtoasformalvolunteering,butasignificantnumberalsoservelessformally,eitherindividuallyoraspartofagroup.Bydefinition,avolunteerworkerdoesnotgetpaidorreceivecompensationforservicesrenderedotherthanreimbursementforout-of-pocketexpensesManyorganizations(hospitals,foodbanks,etc.)haveacontinualneedforvolunteers.Otherhigh-profileevents,suchasamarathon,requirehundredsorthousandsofvolunteersforaone-timeorannualneed.Thesuccessofsucheventshasasignificanteconomicimpactonthelocaleconomy.Thus,thereisincreasingawarenessoftheeconomicimportanceofvolunteers.This,inturn,haselevatedtheimportanceofthevolunteermanagerforsuchevents,peoplewhoformerlymayhavemanagedvolunteersinadditiontootherdutiesbutnowmaybeviewedasprofessionalsinthefield.Thishasalsoincreasedtheneedforvolunteermanagementsoftware,e-mailbroadcasts,textingandothertechnologicaltools,allowingthevolunteermanagertoregisterandcommunicatewithlargenumbersofpeoplewhootherwisehavenoconnectiontoeachother.
