  Butintelligentlife?Lifethathasreachedthestageofbeingabletosentradiowavesoutintospaceinadeliberatepattern?Ourownplanetmayhavebeeninexistenceforfivebillionyearsandmayhavehadlifeonitfortwobillion,butitisonlyinthelastfiftyyearsthatintelligentlifecapableofsendingradiowavesintospacehaslivedonearth.Fromthisitmightseemthateveniftherewerenotechnicalproblemsinvolved,thechanceofreceivingsignalsfromanyparticularearth-typeplanetwouldbeextremelysmall.

  Thisdoesnotmeanthatintelligentlifeatourleveldoesnotexistsomewhere.Thereissuchanunimaginablenumberofstarsthat,evenatsuchmiserableodds,itseemscertainthattherearemillionofintelligentlifeformsscatteredthroughspace.Theonlytroubleis,nonemaybewithinhailingdistanceofus.Perhapsnoneeverwillbe;perhapstheappallingdistancesthatseparateusfromourfellowdenizensofthisuniversewillforeverremaintoogreattobeconquered.Andyetitisconceivablethatsomedaywemaycomeacrossoneofthemor,frighteningly,oneofthemmaycomeacrossus.Whatwouldtheybelike,theseextraterrestrialcreatures?
