　　TheWarringStatesPeriodcoversaperiodduringwhichthesevenindividualkingdoms,Qi,Chu,Yan,Han,Zhao,WeiandQin-contendedwitheachotherforhegemony.QuYuan,wholivedintheChuState,wastrustedbyKingHuaianddidmuchtoassisttheKingingoverningthestate.FollowingreformationintheQinstate,theQingainedinstrengthandinvadedtheothersixstates.QuYuansuggestedanalliancewithQiinordertoresistQin.However,thiswasrejectedbysomeoftheministersastheycouldseethattheywouldlosesomeoftheirpowerandprivileges.TheymadefalseaccusationsagainstQuYuanthatwerebelievedbyKingHuai.Themisguidedmonarchbecamealienatedfromhisvaluedadvisorandsenthimintoexileasaconsequence.

　　Intheyearsthatfollowed,Huai,lackingthewisecounselofQuYuan,wasdeceivedbytheQinintothinkingthattheycouldlivetogetherinpeace.However,KingHuaiwassubsequentlydetainedbytheQinStateforyearsuntilhiseventualdeath.KingHuaiwassucceededtothethronebyhissonwhowasevenmorefatuousthanhisfather.HedisregardedQuYuan'sadvicenottosurrendertotheQin.QuYuanwasexiledtoanevenfurtherawaythanbefore.

　　In278BC,uponlearningthattheChuStatehadbeendefeatedbytheQin,QuYuan,ingreatdespairanddistress,endedhislifebydrowningintheMiluoRiverinthenortheasternpartofHunanProvince.

　　Notonlywasheatruepatriot,heisfamedforleavingmanyimmortalpoemsforus.Duringthedaysofhisexile,QuYuanwrotemanyfamouspoems.Inthem,hisloveforhiscountryanditspeoplearerevealednaturally.AmonghisgreatestworksareLiSao(TheLament),TianWen(AskingQuestionsofHeaven),JiuGe(NineSongs),andHuaiSha(EmbracingtheSand).

　　Ofthese,LiSaowastherepresentativeworkofQuYuanandthelongestlyricofromanticismconcerningpoliticsinthehistoryofancientChineseliterature.TianWenischaracterizedby172questionsputtoheaven.Thequestionsconcernaspectsofastronomy,geography,literature,philosophyandotherfields.
