　　Marie’smotherdiedwhenheryoungestdaughterwasonlyten.Fromthenon,Marieknewthatshewouldhavetoworkhardatherlessonsifshewantedtobesuccessfulinherlife.Shestudiedveryhardandwontophonoursatherschool.

　　Marieandheroldersister,Bronya,dreamedofstudyinginFranceattheSorbonne.Theirfather,however,didnotearnenoughmoneytosendthemthere.ItwasMariewhothoughtofaplan:shewouldteachathomeandsendhermoneytoBronya.AfterhersisterfinishedstudyinginParis,shecouldgetworkandsendMariethemoneytostudythereherself.

　　Withtearsintheireyesthegirlsparted,andMarieworkedveryhardforsixyearstopayforsister’sstudies.AtlastitwasMarie’sturn,butbythetimeshegottoFrance,hersisterwasmarriedandcouldnotgivehermuchhelp.

　　AgainMarieworked.Shestudiedinasmallroomwithoutheatorlight.Shelivedonbreadandteamostofthetime,butallsheeverthoughtofwashermathematicsandscience.Thiswasherwould,andaboveall,shelikedherexperiments.

　　ItwasinParisthatshemetandmarriedPierreCurie,ayoungscientistwhohadalreadyearnedrespect.

　　Togethertheymadetheirexperimentsinanoldwoodenhousethatwastoocoldanddampfortheirhealth.Theyknewthatsomeelementsintheworldgaveoffastrangepowerthatcouldgothroughotherobjects.Theyfoundmoreofthispowerinsomeelementsthatinothers,whichmadethembelievethattheremustbeanewelement.

　　Forfouryearstheytriedexperimentstoseparatethispowerfulnewelement.Thentheyfoundsomethingwhichtheycalledradium.Itspowerwasverymuchgreaterthanthepowercontainedinotherelements.

　　TheCuriesweregiventheNobelPrizefortheirgreatdiscovery,buttheyweretooilltogotoStockholmthemselvestoreceiveit.Theyusedthemoneyforfurtherexperimentsontheusesofradium.Theyfounditcouldbeusedintreatingdiseases.

　　PierrediedsuddenlyjustafterhehadbeenofferedagoodpostattheSorbonne.MarieCuriewasgiventhepost.Shethusbecamethefirstwomanevertoteachthere.Shecontinuedtheirworkandmademanymoreimportantdiscoveries.In1911shereceivedanotherNobelPrize.ItistheonlytimeinhistorythattwoNobelPrizeshavebeengiventothesameperson.

　　Shealwayssaidthatitwasbecauseofherchildrenthatshewentonwithherwork-andindoingso,shediscoveredahiddenpowerandgaveittothewould.Itwasthissamepower,however,thatkilledMarieCuriein1934.
