　　Tu，bornin1930，graduatedfromtheBeijingMedicalCollegein1955．SheisachiefresearcherandprofessorattheChinaAcademyofTraditionalChineseMedicine．SheisalsothefirstChinesecitizentobeawardedtheNobelPrizeinmedicine．Inthe1970s，Tucarriedouttheresearch，resultinginthediscoveryofartemisinin（青蒿素），adrugthathasconsiderablycutthenumberofmalariadeathsandsavedmillionsoflives．ThetreatmentisbasedonaherbusedinChinesetraditionalmedicine，calledsweetwormwood．
