　　Inyearspast,themountainsofWudangwereknownforthemanyTaoistmonasteriestobefoundthere,monasterieswhichbecameknownasanacademiccentrefortheresearch,teachingandpractiseofmeditation,Chinesemartialarts,traditionalChinesemedicine,Taoistagriculturepractisesandrelatedarts.AsearlyastheEasternHanDynasty(25–220AD),themountainattractedtheEmperor'sattention.DuringtheTangDynasty(618–907),thefirstsiteofworship—theFiveDragonTemple—wasconstructed.Themonasterieswereemptied,damagedandthenneglectedduringandaftertheCulturalRevolutionof1966–1976,buttheWudangmountainshavelatelybecomeincreasinglypopularwithtouristsfromelsewhereinChinaandabroadduetotheirsceniclocationandhistoricalinterest.ThemonasteriesandbuildingsweremadeaUNESCOWorldHeritageSitein1994.ThepalacesandtemplesinWudang,whichwasbuiltasanorganizedcomplexduringtheMingDynasty(14th–17thcenturies),containsTaoistbuildingsfromasearlyasthe7thcentury.ItrepresentsthehigheststandardsofChineseartandarchitectureoveraperiodofnearly1,000years.NotedtemplesincludetheGoldenHall,NanyanTempleandthePurpleCloudTemple.
