CareerRogerRosenblattbeganwritingprofessionallyinhismid-thirties,whenhebecameLiteraryEditorandacolumnistforTheNewRepublic.Beforethat,hetaughtatHarvard,whereheearnedhisPh.D,heldtheBriggs-Copelandappointmentintheteachingofwriting,andwasAllston-BurrSeniorTutorandMasterofDunsterHouse.Atage29,hewastheyoungesthousemasterinHarvard’shistory.HewasaFulbrightScholarinIrelandin1965-66.Sixuniversitieshaveawardedhimhonorarydoctorates.In2005,hewastheEdwardR.MurrowvisitingprofessoratHarvard.In2008hewasappointedDistinguishedProfessorofEnglishandWritingatStonyBrookUniversity,oneoffivesuchappointmentsintheSUNYsystem,wherehecurrentlyteaches.HispiecesforTimemagazinehavewontwoGeorgePolkAwards,awardsfromtheOverseasPressClub,theAmericanBarAssociation,andothers.HistelevisionessaysfortheNewsHourwithJimLehreronPBShavewonthePeabodyandtheEmmy.HisTimecoveressay,“ALettertotheYear2086,”waschosenforthetimecapsuleplacedinsidetheStatueofLibertyatitscentennial.WhenhewaswritingacolumnfortheWashingtonPost,Washingtonianmagazinenamedhim“BestColumnistinWashington.”Heistheauthorof14books,whichhavebeenpublishedin14languages.Theyincludethenationalbestseller,RulesforAging;threecollectionsofessays;andChildrenofWar,whichwontheRobertF.KennedyBookPrizeandwasafinalistfortheNationalBookCriticsCircleAward,andUnlessitMovestheHumanHeart,ontheartofwriting.Hisfirstnovel,LaphamRisingwasalsoanationalbestseller,aswasMakingToast,abook-lengthversionofhisDecember2008essayinTheNewYorker,onthedeathofhisdaughter.Hehaswrittensixoff-BroadwayplaysincludingAshleyMontanaGoesAshoreintheCaicos,andTheOldsmobiles,bothproducedattheFleaTheater.Hiscomic,one-personshow,FreeSpeechinAmerica,whichheperformedattheAmericanPlaceTheater,wascitedbytheNewYorkTimesasoneofthe10bestplaysof1991.In2009hewasselectedasoneofthreefinalistsfortheRobertCherryAwardforthemostdistinguisheduniversityteachersinthecountry.WilliamSafireoftheNewYorkTimeswrotethatRogerRosenblatt’sworkrepresents“someofthemostprofoundandstylishwritinginAmericatoday.”VanityFairsaidthathe“setnewstandardsofthoughtandcompassion”injournalism.TheChicagoTribunesaidthatheturned“magazinejournalismintoanartform.”ThePhiladelphiaInquirercitedhisessaysfor“unparalleledeleganceandwit.”Initsissueon“TheBest”(January2004),TownandCountrynamedhimthe“finestessayistinthecountry.”KirkusReviewsnoted,"Hehasexcelledinnearlyeveryliteraryform."UPIcalledhim“anationaltreasure.”
