TheChangJianghas204km/127miofgorges,belowwhichliestheGezhoubaDam,justupstreamofYichanginHubeiprovince.TheGezhoubawasthefirsthydroelectricdamontheriver,andisChina'slargestcompletedfacility;itsoutputwillbeovertakenbytheThreeGorgesproject(scheduledforcompletion2003),whichwillbetheworld'slargestdamandhydroelectricscheme.
Inthesummerof1998theChangJiangfloodedkilling3,000peopleanddestroying5millionhomes.
