中国文化之所以仅存零星者,说者谓有二故：一者华土之民,先居黄河流域,颇乏天惠,其生也勤,故重实际而黜玄想,不能集古传以成大文.二者孔子出,以修身齐家治国平天下等实用为教,不欲言鬼神,太古荒唐之说,俱为儒者所不道,故其后不特无所光大,而又散亡.
然详案之,其故殆尤在神鬼之不别.天神地只人鬼,古者虽若有辨,而人鬼亦得为神祗.人神淆杂,则原始信仰无由蜕尽；原始信仰存则类于传说之言日出不已,而旧有者于是僵死,新出者亦更无光焰也.
