洛阳位于河南省西部、黄河南岸,是世界“四大圣城（耶路撒冷、麦加、洛阳、雅典）”之一,是中国唯一被命名为“神都”的城市,是中国建都最早、朝代最多、历史最长的都城.是国务院首批公布的历史文化名城之一,是中国优秀旅游城市和“感动世界的中国品牌城市”.洛阳因地处古洛水之北岸而得名.以洛阳为中心的河洛地区是华夏文明的重要发祥地.洛阳是中华民族的摇篮.“永怀河洛间,煌煌祖宗业”.中国古代伏羲、女娲、黄帝、帝喾、唐尧、虞舜、夏禹等神话,多传于此.帝喾都亳邑,夏太康迁都斟鄩,商汤定都西亳；武王伐纣,八百诸侯会孟津；周公辅政,迁九鼎于洛邑.平王东迁,高祖都洛,光武中兴,魏晋相禅,孝文改制,隋唐盛世,后梁唐晋,相因沿袭,共十三个王朝.汉魏以后,洛阳逐渐成为国际大都市,隋唐时人口百万,四方纳贡,百国来朝,盛极一时.“崤函帝宅,河洛王国”,洛阳在历史上相当长的时期内,曾经是我国政治、经济、文化的中心,亦是道路四通八达的交通枢纽.

　　西周初期,在中国建立了第一个大公路网,洛阳是其中心,驰道驿路,其直如矢,无远不达；隋大业元年（公元605年）,隋炀帝在洛阳建都,下令开凿大运河,至此形成了以洛阳为中心,向东北、东南辐射总长达2000多公里的南北水运网；以洛阳为东端起点的“丝绸之路”,可以直驰地中海东岸,明驼宛马,络绎不绝.
