PsychologistsDrBrendaToddfromCityUniversityLondoncarriedoutanexperimentinvolving90infantsagedninemonthsto36months.Thebabieswereallowedtochoosefromseventoys.Somewerestereotypicallyboys'toys-acaradiggeraballandablueteddy.Therestweregirls'toys:apinkteddyadollandacookingset.Theywereplacedameterawayfromthetoysandcouldpickwhichevertoytheyliked.Theirchoiceandtheamountoftimetheyspentplayingwitheachtoywererecorded.
Oftheyoungestchildren(nineto14months)girlsspentsignificantlylongerplayingwiththedollthanboysandboysspentmuchmoretimewiththecarandballthanthegirlsdid.Amongthetwo-andthree-year-oldsgirlsspent50percentofthetimeplayingwiththedollwhileonlytwoboysbrieflytouchedit.Theboysspentalmost90percentoftheirtimeplayingwithcarswhichthegirlsbarelytouched.Therewasnolinkbetweentheparents'viewonwhichtoysweremoreappropriateforboysorgirlsandthechildren'schoice.
DrBrendaToddsaid:“Childrenofthisagearealreadyexposedtomuchsocialization.Boysmaybegiven'toysthatgo'whilegirlsgettoystheycancareforwhichmayhelpshapetheirpreference.Butthesefindingsagreewiththeformerideathatchildrenshownaturalinterestsinparticularkindsoftoys.Therecouldbeabiologicalbasisfortheirchoices.Malesthroughevolutionhavebeenadaptedtoprefermovingobjectsprobablythroughhuntinginstincts(本能)whilegirlspreferwarmercolourssuchaspinkthecolourofanewbornbaby.”
