ADOG,crossingabridgeoverastreamwithapieceoffleshinhismouth,sawhisownshadowinthewater,andtookitforthatofanotherDog,withapieceofmeatdoublehisowninsize.Hethereforeletgohisown,andfiercelyattackedtheotherDog,togethislargerpiecefromhim.Hethuslostboth:thatwhichhegraspedatinthewater,becauseitwasashadow;andhisown,becausethestreamsweptitaway.

Shecouldhavedrownedifadoveupanearbytreehadnotseenher.Seeingthattheantwasintrouble,thedovequicklypluckedoffaleafanddroppeditintothewaternearthestrugglingant.Theantmovedtowardstheleafandclimbedupthere.Soonitcarriedhersafelytodryground.
Justatthattime,ahunternearbywasthrowingouthisnettowardsthedove,hopingtotrapit.
Guessingwhathewasabouttodo,theantquicklybithimontheheel.Feelingthepain,thehunterdroppedhisnet.Thedovewasquicktoflyawaytosafety.
MORAL:Onegoodturndeservesanother.

Markwaswalkinghomefromschoolonedaywhenhenoticedtheboyaheadofhimhadtrippedanddroppedallofthebookshewascarrying,alongwithtwosweaters,abaseballbat,agloveandasmalltaperecorder.Markkneltdownandhelpedtheboypickupthescatteredarticles.Sincetheyweregoingthesameway,hehelpedtocarrypartoftheburden.AstheywalkedMarkdiscoveredtheboy'snamewasBill,thathelovedvideogames,baseballandhistory,andthathewashavinglotsoftroublewithhisothersubjectsandthathehadjustbrokenupwithhisgirlfriend.TheyarrivedatBill'shomefirstandMarkwasinvitedinforaCokeandtowatchsometelevision.Theafternoonpassedpleasantlywithafewlaughsandsomesharedsmalltalk,thenMarkwenthome.Theycontinuedtoseeeachotheraroundschool,hadlunchtogetheronceortwice,thenbothgraduatedfromjuniorhighschool.Theyendedupinthesamehighschoolwheretheyhadbriefcontactsovertheyears.Finallythelongawaitedsenioryearcameandthreeweeksbeforegraduation,BillaskedMarkiftheycouldtalk.
Billremindedhimofthedayyearsagowhentheyhadfirstmet."DidyoueverwonderwhyIwascarryingsomanythingshomethatday?"askedBill."Yousee,IcleanedoutmylockerbecauseIdidn'twanttoleaveamessforanyoneelse.IhadstoredawaysomeofmymotherssleepingpillsandIwasgoinghometocommitsuicide.Butafterwespentsometimetogethertalkingandlaughing,IrealizedthatifIhadkilledmyself,Iwouldhavemissedthattimeandsomanyothersthatmightfollow.Soyousee,Mark,whenyoupickedupthosebooksthatday,youdidalotmore,yousavedmylife."
