　　美国著名语言学家乔姆斯基认为:语言是受规则支配的体系.人类学习语言决不是单纯模仿和记忆的过程,而是创造性地活用的过程.外语教师一方面要教会学生发现规则,另一方面也要教会学生创造性地活用这些规则,即培养学生创造性地应用语言规则的能力.因此,在外语教学中,教师不仅要讲解语言点,而且更主要的是要大量提供学生创造性活用语言规则的机会和情景,通过学生个人或集体的语言实践活动,提高其外语应用能力.而且,语言的本质及语言与文化的关系决定了外语教学必须注意文化差异.在语言教学实践中,对学生进行文化背景知识的传授和跨文化交际能力的培养,已经被美国外语教学协会列入交际能力的内容.对学外语的人来讲,如果不了解有关的文化背景知识就很难理解语言本身.作为一个外语教师,如果对这种文化、心理上的差异视而不见,就必然会导致语言教学和文化脱节,使学生缺乏跨文化意识.因此,外语教师应注重文化知识与语言学习实践的有机结合,让学生充分了解英语的文化背景和社交准则;培养他们对不同文化的包容感,使自己的交际行为符合该民族文化的语用原则;并倡导以“任务型”的教学模式为主:这种教学模式重视的是学生的学习活动,学生通过思考、调查、讨论、交流和合作等方式来完成学习任务,使学生在提高语言知识与语言技能的同时,也提高了对语言文化的感知,从而克服跨文化交际障碍,真正提高语言运用能力.
