Aspartofapilotprogram,RoslynHighSchoolhandedout47iPadsonDec.20,2010tothestudentsandteachersintwohumanities(人文学科)classes.TheschooldistricthopestoprovideiPadseventuallytoall1,100ofitsstudents.
TheiPadsaretobeusedinclassandathomduringtheschoolyeartoreplacetexbooks,allowstudentstocorrespondwithteachersandtuminpapersandhomeworktasks,andpreservearocordofstudentworkindigitalfiles.
“Itallowsustoextendtheclassesbeyondthesefourwalls.”saidlarryReiff,anEnglishteacheratRoslynwhonowpostsallhiscoursemateialsonline.
Buteducatorsarestilldividedoverwhetherpracticestogiveeverystudentalaptophavemadeadifferenceacademically.
“Threisverylittleevidencethatkidslearnmore,fasterofbetterbyusingthesemachines,”saidLarryCuban,aretriedprofessorofeductionatStafordUniversity.“IPadsareexcellenttoolstoattractkids,butthenthefieshnesswearsoffandyouegetinthard-coreproblemsofteachingandlearning.”
ButschoolleaderssaytheiPadisnotjustacoolnewtoybutratherapowerfulandmultifunctionaltoolwithanumberofapplications,includingthousandswitheducationaluses.
