TurntablismreferstotheextendedboundariesandtechniquesofnormalDJinginnovatedbyhiphop.OneofthefewfirsthiphopDJ'swasKoolDJHerc,whocreatedhiphopthroughtheisolationof"breaks"(thepartsofalbumsthatfocusedsolelyonthebeat).InadditiontodevelopingHerc'stechniques,DJsGrandmasterFlowers,GrandmasterFlash,GrandWizardTheodore,andGrandmasterCazmadefurtherinnovationswiththeintroductionofscratching.
Traditionally,aDJwillusetwoturntablessimultaneously.TheseareconnectedtoaDJmixer,anamplifier,speakers,andvariousotherpiecesofelectronicmusicequipment.TheDJwillthenperformvarioustricksbetweenthetwoalbumscurrentlyinrotationusingtheabovelistedmethods.Theresultisauniquesoundcreatedbytheseeminglycombinedsoundoftwoseparatesongsintoonesong.Althoughthereisconsiderableoverlapbetweenthetworoles,aDJisnotthesameasaproducerofamusictrack.
Intheearlyyearsofhiphop,theDJswerethestars,buttheirlimelight[citationneeded]hasbeentakenbyMCssince1978,thankslargelytoMelleMelofGrandmasterFlash'screw,theFuriousFive.However,anumberofDJshavegainedstardomnonethelessinrecentyears.FamousDJsincludeGrandmasterFlash,AfrikaBambaataa,Mr.Magic,DJJazzyJeff,DJScratchfromEPMD,DJPremierfromGangStarr,DJScottLaRockfromBoogieDownProductions,DJPeteRockofPeteRock&CLSmooth,DJMuggsfromCypressHill,JamMasterJayfromRun-DMC,EricB.,DJScrewfromtheScrewedUpClickandtheinventoroftheChopped&Screwedstyleofmixingmusic,FunkmasterFlex,TonyTouch,DJClue,andDJQ-Bert.TheundergroundmovementofturntablismhasalsoemergedtofocusontheskillsoftheDJ.
MixtapeDJshavealsoemergedcreatingmixtapeswithdifferentartistsandgettingexclusivesongsandputtingthemononedisc,suchasDJWhiteOwl,DJSkee,DJDramaandDJWhooKid.

InAmericaaroundthelate1960s,graffitiwasusedasaformofexpressionbypoliticalactivists,andalsobygangssuchastheSavageSkulls,LaFamilia,andSavageNomadstomarkterritory.Towardstheendofthe1960s,thesignatures—tags—ofPhiladelphiagraffitiwritersTopCat,[58]CoolEarlandCornbreadstartedtoappear.[59]Around1970–71,thecenterofgraffitiinnovationmovedtoNewYorkCitywherewritersfollowinginthewakeofTAKI183andTracy168wouldaddtheirstreetnumbertotheirnickname,"bomb"atrainwiththeirwork,andletthesubwaytakeit—andtheirfame,ifitwasimpressive,orsimplypervasive,enough—"allcity".BubbleletteringheldswayinitiallyamongwritersfromtheBronx,thoughtheelaborateBrooklynstyleTracy168dubbed"wildstyle"wouldcometodefinetheart.[58][60]Theearlytrendsetterswerejoinedinthe70sbyartistslikeDondi,Futura2000,Daze,Blade,Lee,Zephyr,Rammellzee,Crash,Kel,NOC167andLadyPink.[58]
Therelationshipbetweengraffitiandhiphopculturearisesbothfromearlygraffitiartistspracticingotheraspectsofhiphop,anditsbeingpracticedinareaswhereotherelementsofhiphopwereevolvingasartforms.Graffitiisrecognizedasavisualexpressionofrapmusic,justasbreakingisviewedasaphysicalexpression.ThebookSubwayArt(NewYork:HenryHolt&Co,1984)andtheTVprogramStyleWars(firsts
