　　WilliamPorterrentedthishouseinAustinandlivedtherewithhiswifeAtholanddaughterMargaretforabouttwoyears．ManyobjectsinthemuseumbelongedtothePorters．Othersdidnot．Animportantpieceintheroomistheoriginalphotographoverhere．Itwastakenthereinthehouseabout1895．Thepianotheregoesbacktothe1860s．HiswifetooklessonsonitwhenshefirstmovedtoAustin．

　　Porterdidnotstarthiscareerasasuccessfulwriter．Heworkedatafarmlandofficeandbank．Healsolovedwordsandwriting．Themuseumhasaspecialproof(证明)ofPorter’sloveoflanguage－hisdictionary．Itissaidthathehadreadeverywordinthatdictionary．

　　LaterWilliamPorterwasforcedtoleaveAustinbecausehewascharged(指控)withfinancialwrongdoingatthebankandlosthisjob．Becausehewasafraidofatrail(审判)heleftthecountrysecretly．Buthereturnedbecausehiswifewasdying．Afterherdeathhefacedthetrialandbecameacriminal．HeservedthreeandahalfyearsinaprisoninOhio．

　　WilliamPorterwouldkeephistimeinprisonasecret．Buttherewasonegoodthingaboutit．Itprovidedhimwithtimetowrite．Bythetimehewasfreedhehadpublished14storiesandbecamewellknownasO．Henry．

　　PorterlatermovedtoNewYorkCityandfoundgreatsuccessthere．Hepublishedover180storiesinthelasteightyearsofhislife．
