　　PrideandPrejudicewasJaneAusten’ssecondnovelwrittenin1796andwaspublishedinJanuary1813.Themainsubjectinthenovelisstatedinthefirstsentenceofthenovel:"Itisatruthuniversallyacknowledgedthatasinglemaninpossessionofagoodfortunemustbeinwantofawife."Inthisstatement,shehasdeclaredthatthemainsubjectofthenovelwillbecourtshipandmarriage.SimilartootherJaneAusten’snovels,itwaswritteningentlesatire.ThemainobjectofJane’ssatireinthenovelisthemercenaryandtheignoranceofthepeople,acommoncriticismofthe18thcentury.

　　However,itisthepricelesslovethatimpressedmemost.PrideandPrejudicecontainsoneofthemostvaluablelovestoriesinEnglishliterature:thecourtshipbetweenDarcyandElizabeth.Asinanygoodlovestory,theloversmustovercomemanystumblingblocks,beginningwiththetensionscausedbythelovers'ownpersonalqualities.Elizabeth'spridemakeshermisjudgeDarcyonthebasisofapoorfirstimpression,whileDarcy'sprejudiceagainstElizabeth'spoorsocialstandingblindshimtohermanyvirtues.Austen,meanwhile,putcountlesssmallerobstaclestotherealizationofthelovebetweenElizabethandDarcy.Ineachcase,anxietiesaboutsocialconnections,orthedesireforbettersocialconnections,interferewiththeworkingsoflove.DarcyandElizabeth'srealizationofatenderloveseemstoimplythatAustenviewsloveassomethingindependentofthesesocialforces,assomethingthatcanbecapturedifonlyanindividualisabletoescapetheeffectsofhierarchicalsociety.Yetwiththisdeviouslovestory,Iknowandbelievethattrueloveisaforceseparatefromsocietyandonethatcanconquereventhemostdifficultofcircumstances.
