　　BorninSeptember1897IreneCuriewasthefirstoftheCuries’twodaughters．AlongwithnineotherchildrenwhoseparentswerealsofamousscholarsIrenestudiedintheirownschoolandhermotherwasoneoftheteachers．ShefinishedherhighschooleducationattheCollegeofSévignéinParis．

　　IreneenteredtheUniversityofParisin1914toprepareforadegreeinmathematicsandphysics．WhenWorldWarIbeganIrenewenttohelphermotherwhowasusingX-rayfacilities(设备)tohelpsavethelivesofwoundedsoldiers．IrenecontinuedtheworkbydevelopingX-rayfacilitiesinmilitaryhospitalsinFranceandBelgium．HerserviceswererecognizedintheformofaMilitary’sMedalbytheFrenchgovernment．

　　In1918Irenebecamehermother’sassistantattheCurieInstitute．InDecember1924FredericJoliotjoinedtheInstituteandIrenetaughthimthetechniquesrequiredforhiswork．Theysoonfellinloveandweremarriedin1926．TheirdaughterHelenewasbornin1927andtheirsonPierrefiveyearslater．

　　LikehermotherIrenecombinedfamilyandcareer．LikehermotherIrenewasawardedaNobelPrizealongwithherhusbandin1935．Unfortunatelyalsolikehermothershedevelopedleukemiabecauseofherworkwithradioactivity(辐射能)．IreneJoliot-CuriediedfromleukemiaonMarch171956．
