Thosewhoworkoutsideofthemedicalindustryoftenconfusetherolesofdoctorandnurse,notawarethatthetwohaveverydifferentfunctions.Althoughthetwoworkside-by-sideinmanysituationsandneedeachothertocompletecertaintasks,therearemajordifferencesbetweenadoctorandnurse.Bothroles,however,areessentialforthemedicalindustryandofequalimportance.Puttingstereotypesaside,thedifferencesbetweenadoctorandnurseareevaluatedbelow.
Doctorsandnursesfirstdifferintheirjobdescriptions.Inmostcases,thedoctoristaskedwithexamininganddiagnosingpatients.Anurse,ontheotherhand,willhaveamorehands-onrolewithphysicallytreatingapatientbasedonthedoctor'sdiagnosis.Nursesoftenjokethattheyarejustasknowledgeable,yetarepaidlessandchargedwithperformingthe"dirtywork".However,bothjobscanbephysicallyandemotionallydemanding.Itshouldbepointedoutthattheroleofanurseisnotalwaysasasubordinatetodoctors.Advancednurses,suchasnursepractitioners,willalsodiagnosepatientsandcanevenprescribemedication.
Anothermajordifferencebetweenadoctorandnurseistheirsalary.Whilenotalwaystrue,theaveragedoctorearnsahigheryearlyincomethantheaveragenurse.Accordingtoa2006studybyAlliedPhysiciansIncorporated,ahospitalstaffnurseearnsanaverageof$45,000ayear.Ahospitalstaffdoctor,however,earnswellintothesixfiguresinthefirstyearofpractice.Whileanadvancedpracticenurseinasupervisorypositioncouldtakeinatleast$75,000,anexperiencedsurgeoncouldearnover$1million.
Nursesanddoctorsalsodifferinlengthofcollegestudy.Whilesomenursesobtainspecializeddegreesinagraduateprogram,theminimumdegreerequirementforaregisterednurse(RN)isafour-yearbachelor'sdegree.Adoctor,however,mustobtainaPhD,whichtakeseightyearsonaverage.Aspecialistphysician,however,couldremainincollegeforoveradecade.Bothadoctorandnursewilltypicallyearnahigherwageforobtainingadvanceddegrees.Itseemsthatbotharecompensatedforlengthycollegestays.
Whileitisobviousthatthecareerofadoctorandnursearedifferent,itisimportanttonotethatthetwocomplementeachotherintheprocessofhealingpatients.Neithercouldexistwithouttheotherandneitherroleismoreimportant.Thosedebatingwhichfieldtoenter,however,shouldconsidertheirownbedsidemanneraswellasthedifferencesofsalaryanddegreerequirements.
