MunichisnottheonlylocationwithinBavariaknownas"München".Threesuchlocationsexist:onethatisknownas"Munich",anotherthatislocatednortheastofthecityofNuremberg,andathird,Hutthurm,thatislocatednorthofPassau.

Munichhasalsohostedthe1972SummerOlympicsandwasoneofthehostcitiesforthe2006FootballWorldCupwhichwasnotheldinMunich'sOlympicStadiumbutinanewfootballspecificstadium,theAllianzArena.
TheDeutscherBaseballVereinhoststwoteamsinthearea,theMunich-HaarDisciples,andtheGautingIndians;bothofwhichcurrentlyplayintheFirstLeagueoftheBundesliga,bothintheSouthDivision.ThishascreatedastrongrivalrysincetheDisciplesenteredthefirstleaguein2007.
OnOctober16,2009,theInternationalOlympicCommitteehaslistedMunichasoneofthethreeApplicantCitiesfor2018WinterOlympicGames,withAnnecy,France,andPyeongchang,SouthKorea.Ifchosen,MunichwillbethefirstcitytohostboththeSummerandWinterOlympicGames.
