AfterWorldWarⅡthepopulationofmostlargeAmericancitiesdecreased;howeverthepopulationinmanySunBeltcitiesincreased.LosAnglesandHoustonarecitieswherepopulationshifts(转移)toandfromthecityreflectthechangingvaluesofAmericansociety.Inthelate1940sandearly1950scityresidentsbecamewealthier.Theyhadmorechildrensotheyneededmorespace.Theymovedoutoftheirapartmentsinthecitytobuytheirownhomes.Theyboughthousesinthesuburbs.
Nowthingsarechanging.Thechildrenofthepeoplewholeftthecitiesinthe1950sarenowadults.Manyunliketheirparentswanttoliveinthecities.TheycontinuetomovetoSunBeltcitiesandolderonesoftheNortheastandMidwest.Manyyoungprofessionalsaremovingbackintothecity.Theypreferthecitytothesuburbsbecausetheirjobsarethere;ortheyjustenjoytheexcitementandpossibilitiesthatthecityoffers.
Thispopulationshiftisbringingproblemsaswellasbenefits.Countlesspoorpeoplemustleavetheirapartmentsinthecitybecausetheownerswanttosellthebuildingsormakeapartmentsforsaleinsteadofforrent.Inthe1950smanypoorpeopledidnothaveenoughmoneytomovetothesuburbs;nowmanyofthesesamepeopledonothaveenoughmoneytostayinthecities.
OnlyafewyearsagopeoplethoughtthattheolderAmericancitiesweredying.Somecityresidentsnowseeabrightnewfuture.Othersseeonlyproblemsandconflicts.Onethingissure:manydyingcitiesarealiveagain.
