ForcenturiesPompeiilayburiedunderstoneandash.Thenintheyear1861anItalianscientistnamedGinseppebegantouncoverPompeii.SlowlycarefullyGinseppeandhismendug.ThecitylookedalmostthesameasithadlookedinAD79.Therewerestreetsandfountainshousesandshops.Therewasastadiumwith20000seats.PerhapsthemostimportantofalltherewereeverydayobjectswhichtellusagreatdealaboutthepeoplewholivedinPompeii.ManyglassesandjarshadsomedarkbluecolourinthebottomsoweknowthatthepeopleofPompeiilikedwine.Theylikedbreadtoometalbreadpanswereineverybakery.Inonebakerytherewere81roundflatloavesofbread—atypeofbreadthatisstillsoldinItalytoday.Tinyboxesfilledwithadarkshinypowdertellusthatwomenlikedtoweareye-makeup.
Ginseppehasdiedbuthisworkcontinues.One-fourthhasnotbeenuncoveredyet.ScientistsarestilldiggingstillmakingdiscoveriesthatdrawthetouriststoPompeii.
