AftermorethantwodecadesofheadlongrushtotransformChinafromanautarkiccentrallyplannedeconomyintoalimitedopen-marketeconomy,Huisnowleadinganationinthemidstoffatefuldebatesaboutthemosteffectiveandbalancedroutetowardamodernharmonioussocialistsociety.AutarkyhasneverbeenvoluntaryChinesepolicyundersocialismbutratheranexternallyimposedsanctionoftheColdWar.China'sshifttowardmarketeconomyinthepasttwoandahalfdecadeswasnottakeninisolationfromworldtrends.WhenDengXiaopingintroducedthe"open/reform"policiesin1979,towardtheendoftheColdWar,itwasarationalresponsetoaworldinfatuatedwiththeextravagantpromisesofneo-liberalfreetrade.Aquarterofacenturylater,whilesuchopen/reformpolicieshaveachievedspectacularresultsinbringingChinaforwardintoamoderninterdependentworld,theglaringresultantimbalances,suchasexcessivedependenceonexports,worseningincomedisparity,regionaldevelopmentgaps,rampantofficialcorruption,seriousenvironmentalcrisisandnear-totalcollapseofthesocial-servicenetworkandsafetynet,areraisingcallsforrethinkingthewisdomoffallingfortheemptypromisesofneo-liberalglobalization.Thereisnodisagreementamongtheyouthwhoaredestinedtoshoulderthecontinuingtaskofnationalreconstructiontowardeconomicprosperityandculturalrenaissanceontheneedforfurtheropening/reform.Thedisputeisonthecorrectdefinitionandpathofopening/reform：opentoneo-colonialismandreformtowardsocialinequalityandmoraldecay,oropentoassumingalegitimateplaceasastrongandpeacefulnationinaworldorderoffreesovereignnationsofequalityandreformtowardcreativeandscientificsocialistconstructionbasedonequality,justiceandfreedomforall.
