TenyearslaterJamesStarleyanEnglishinventormadeseveralinnovationsthatrevolutionizedbicycledesign.Hemadethefrontwheelmanytimeslargerthanthebackwheelputagearonthepedalstomakethebicyclemoreefficient,andlightenedthewheelsbyusingwirespokes.Althoughthisbicyclewasmuchlighterandlesstiringtorideitwasstillclumsyextremelytop-heavy,andriddenmostlyforentertainment.
Itwasn’tuntil1874thatthefirsttrulymodernbicycleappearedonthescene.InventedbyanotherEnglishmanH.J.Lawsonthesafetybicyclewouldlookfamiliartotoday’scyclists.Thesafetybicyclehadequal-sizedwheelswhichmadeiteasiertoride.Lawsonalsoattachedachaintothepedalstodrivethebackwheel.By1893,thesafetybicyclehadbeenfurtherimprovedwithair-filledrubbertiresadiamond-shapedframeandeasybraking.WiththeimprovementsprovidedbyLawson;bicyclesbecameextremelypopularandusefulfortransportation.Todaytheyarebuiltusedandenjoyedallovertheworld.
