PerhapsthiswaswhyamancalledSirHenryFanshaweaskedacarpener(木匠)tobuildthebiggestbedinEnglandcalledTheGreatBedofWare.Itwasmadeinabout1580andsoonbecamefamous.Forin1596aGermantravelersawitandnotedthatitwaswideenoughforfourcouples.Poetsandplaywrights(includingShakespearein“TwelfthNight”)oftenmentionedit.
Thisisnotsurprisingforitisagrandpieceofwork.Itismadeofoak(像木)andmeasures3.3metresinlengthandwidth.Exceptforitssizeitislikeotherbedsoftheperiodafour-posterbed.Thepoststheheadboardandthecoverarerichlydecorated.Theheadboardinparticularhascarvedandpaintedfiguresandtwopanelsofinlaidwoodwhichshowspecialstructure.
TheGreatBedofWarebecameacuriosity.In1610itwasplacedinasmallhoteltheSaracen'sHeadinthetownofWare.Peoplecametoseeitandthosewhosleptinitcarvedsomewordsandtheirnamesonthewoodworkjustlikemoderntourists.Overtheyearsthebedbecamecoveredwithwordsnamesanddates;theearliestdateis1653.Duringthenineteenthcenturytheoldbedwasmovedfromonehoteltoanotheruntilitwasfinallyshowntothepublicattwopenceahead.
