Australia,thelastcontinent,wasdiscoveredbyshipsbelongingtosomeEuropeannationsintheseventeenthcentury.Thesenationswerelessinterestedinchangingitintoacolonythaninexploringit.AsintheearlyhistoryoftheUnitedStates,itwastheEnglishwhosetupthesettlementsinAustralia.ThishistoryandthegeographyofthesetwoBritishcolonieshavesomeotherthingsincommonaswell.
AustraliaandtheUnitedStatesareaboutthesameinsize,andtheirwesternlandsarebothnotrichinsoil.ItwasontheeasterncoastofAustraliaandAmericathattheEnglishfirstsettled,andbothcoloniessoonbegantodeveloptowardsthewest.However,thiswestwardmovementtookplacemorebecausetheEnglishweresearchingforbetterlandthanbecausethepopulationwasincreasing.SettlementsofthewestpartofbothcountriesdevelopedquicklyaftergoldwasdiscoveredinAmericain1849andinAustraliatwoyearslater.
Althoughthedevelopmentofthesetwocountrieshasalotincommon,therearesomestrikingdifferencesaswell.TheUnitedStatesgaineditsindependencefromEnglandbyrevolutionwhileAustraliawonitsindependencewithouthavingtogotowar.Australia,unliketheUnitedStates,wasfirstlyturnedintoacolonybyEnglishprisonersanditseconomicdevelopmentwasinwheatgrowingandsheepraising.By1922,forexample,AustraliahadfifteentimesmoresheepthanithadpeopleoralmosthalfasmanysheepastherearepeopletodayintheUnitedStates.AustraliaandtheUnitedStateshavemoreincommonwitheachotherthaneitheronehaswithmostoftherestoftheworld.
