Compulsiveshoppingwasfirstdiscoveredin1915althoughitwasthenknownasoniomania.Fewstudieshavebeendoneontheproblem.
AnadvertisementinaChristchurchpapercallingforpeopletotakepartinanexperimentaltreatmentprogramdesignedbyMr.Wilsonattracted10replies.ButtheproblemsaidMrWilsonis“clearlynotrare”.Hethinksthatcompulsiveshoppingshouldbetreatedwithdrugs.“Aspsychologistsweareinterestedinnon-drugtreatmentsforbehavioraldifficulties”MrWilsonsaid.
Compulsiveeatersorshoppersgetakickfromtheirhabit.“Bothactivitiesprovideanimmediatekindofkickandyoufeelabitbetter”hesaid.“Youhavelong-termproblemsbuthumanbeingsareextremelygoodatnotseeinglong-termproblemsandareverysensitivetoshort-termbenefits”hesaid.
Theaimofthetreatmentwastohelppeoplefindbetterwaysofmanagingtheiremotions.Theprogramconsistingof10one-hourweeklylessonsandtwofollow-uptreatmentsislooselybasedonteachingstressmanagement.
“Youoftenhavetostarttogetpeopletocorrectlyrecognizetheiremotions.Notbeingabletoknowwhatyoureallyfeelweakensyourabilitytosolvetheproblemsconnectedwithwhat’smakingyoufeelthatway”Mr.Wilsonsaid.
