Languageandmindhavebeentwoofthepremierresearchareasof20thcenturyphilosophy.Eachhasbeenstudiedindependentlyoftheother,withthephilosophyoflanguagedominatingthefirsthalfofthecenturyandthephilosophyofmindsurginginthesecondhalf.Thephilosophyoflanguagedoesnotstudyparticularhumanlanguages.Rather,itfocusesonmoreabstractquestionsoflanguageitself,includinghowsentencesmeanwhattheydo,hownamesrefertoindividualsornaturalkinds,howwecantalkaboutnon-existentthings,andwhether(andhow)twosentencescanmeanthesamething.Thephilosophyofmindin20thcenturyanalyticphilosophyincludesthetraditionalchallengesofthemind/bodyproblem,butalsoaimsatassessingtheprospectsofparticularsciencesofthemindsuchasscientificpsychologyandneuroscience.
