Raceisoneareawhereculturalmisunderstandingsarecommon.WeAmericanstendtoassumethatracialcategoriesarebiologicalratherthansocial,soitmaynotoccurtousthatpeoplefromothercultureshaveadifferentsetofracialconceptsandclassifythemselvesandusdifferently.SomeAfricanAmericanscomplainthatcertainimmigrantsfromothercountries,suchasHaitiorJamaica,“actasiftheyaren’tblack.”Theculturalmisunderstandingisthat,intheimmigrants’countriesoforigin,theywouldneverdescribethemselvesas“black”.Thisdoesn’tmeanthattheythinktheyarewhite.Itjustmeansthattheircultureshavemorecategories,likemarabouorgrimaudinHaiti,orfairorbrowninJamaica,thanareusedintheUnitedStates.Meanwhile,whitepeopleinAmerica,unawareofthisculturaldiversity,sometimesrefertoalldarker-skinnedpeopleas“black”withoutrealizingthatanissueexists.
Resolvingculturalmisunderstandingscancleartheairorevenleadtolaughter.Sometimes,though,whenitcomestorace,unidentifiedculturalmisunderstandingscancreatetension,unhappinessanddistrust.
