century.Whileallofthesocialsciencedisciplineshavedevelopedliteratures
onacculturation,psychologyhashadbyfarthemostinfluenceinconsumer
research,eveninresearchthataspirestosocialandculturallevelsof
analysis.Mostinvestigatorsworkwithconstructssimilartothefourfold
typologyofacculturationattitudesassociatedwithJohnW.Berry(seeRudmin
[2003]foranextensivereviewandcritique).AccordingtoBerry,migrantscan
proactivelyadoptthedominantcultureandseektoridthemselvesoftheir
minorityculture(assimilation),theycanrejectthedominantcultureinorder
toretaintheminorityculture(separation),theycancombinethetwocultures
intosomesortofhybrid(integration),
ortheycanbecomedistancedfrombothcultures(marginalization).Consumer
researchershaveenjoinedthislong-runningresearchstreambyconsideringthe
roleofconsumptioninvariousacculturationprocessesandoutcomes(Askegaard,
Arnould,andKjeldgaard2005;Oswald1999;Pen˜aloza
1994).Weusethesethreestudies,allofwhichwerepublishedintheJournalof
ConsumerResearch,asexemplarstosynthesizethisemergingliterature.
