　　Brussels–TheWorldSteelAssociation(worldsteel)hasreleasedits2010globalsteellifecycleinventory(LCI).Thedatasetsprovidethemostaccurateandcomprehensivedataontheenvironmentalprofileof16keyproducts,representativeofthespectrumofsteelproduction.

　　TheLCIdatasetsareusedformaterialselectionandproductdesign.Theyareavailablefreeofchargetoeveryone,fromworldsteelmembersandcustomerstoresearchers,lifecycleassessment(LCA)practitionersandpolicymakers.

　　Thedataenablesafulllifecycleapproachtobeutilisedwhendeterminingtheenvironmentalimpactofsteel-containingproducts,includingtheircarbonfootprints.ItisusedinLCAstudiesthatguidethedevelopmentofenvironmentalstandardsandregulations,andaidsmanufacturersincomplianceandvoluntaryimprovementinitiatives.

　　The16keysteelproductsareusedinabroadspectrumofindustriesfromconstruction,automotiveandshipbuildingtohomeappliances,machineryandpackaging.Thedatarepresentsthedifferentsteelmakingtechnologiesfromaroundtheworld.

　　"Thesteelindustryrecognisestheimportanceoflifecycleassessmentstudiesbecauseincreasinglytheyserveasthebasisforenvironmentallegislationandvoluntaryinitiatives.Consequently,ithasneverbeenmoreimportanttohavetruerepresentationsoftheenvironmentalimpactofaproductormaterial,andthereleaseofthe2010LCIdatacontinuesourcommitmenttoprovideamajortoolforsocietytodesignanduseproductswithalowercarbonfootprint,"saidIanChristmas,DirectorGeneraloftheWorldSteelAssociation.

　　Theworldsteeldatabaseisthebenchmarkstandardforlifecycleinformationonsteelbecauseitisobtaineddirectlyfromthesteelproducersworldwideandisbasedonacriticallyreviewedmethodology.TheproceduresofLCAarepartoftheInternationalStandardsOrganisation(ISO)14040series.Thenewdatasetshavebeendevelopedwithadvancedmodellingsoftwareandshowtheeffectsoftheglobalrecyclabilityofsteel.
