Abstract:Disputesaboutthesuperiorityofteachingmethodsoftenremainunresolved.Theessentialquestionwecontinuouslywanttoansweris:Whichteachingmethodsyieldthebestknowledgeandskillsinstudents?Abundantliterature,inmedicaleducationandineducationingeneral,onresearchwitheducationalmethodsasindependentvariablesandmeasuresofoutcome(e.g.,testscores)asthedependentvariableoftenpointat‘nosignificantdifference’oronlysmalldifferencesbetweenmethods.Manyfactorsdoinfluencetheeducationaloutcomeinstudentsandlargestatisticalpower(suchasmetaanalysis)shouldbehelpfultoeliminatemanysoucesoferror.However,onescourcewecannottacklethisway.Thatis,studentswillusuallyadaptquantityandqualityofstudyingtomeettestingrequirements.Indoingso,theymaycompensateforteachingquality.Someteachingmaygeneratemoreeffortinstudentsthanotherteaching.Sincetestscoresreflectprimarilystudentactivities,itistheireffortsthatmaybringdifferencesinteachingmethodsclosetoequalityintestscores.Therefore,knowledgeandskillsshouldnotbeconsideredtheprimaryoutcomeofteachingbuttheoutcomeoflearningactivities.Ifwewanttodiscriminatebetweenteachingmethods,wemustatleastconsiderwhathappenstostudents.
