Edisondevelopedhearingproblemsatanearlyage.Thecauseofhisdeafnesshasbeenattributedtoaboutofscarletfeverduringchildhoodandrecurringuntreatedmiddle-earinfections.AroundthemiddleofhiscareerEdisonattributedthehearingimpairmenttobeingstruckontheearsbyatrainconductorwhenhischemicallaboratoryinaboxcarcaughtfireandhewasthrownoffthetraininSmithsCreek,Michigan,alongwithhisapparatusandchemicals.Inhislateryearshemodifiedthestorytosaytheinjuryoccurredwhentheconductor,inhelpinghimontoamovingtrain,liftedhimbytheears.
Edison'sfamilywasforcedtomovetoPortHuron,Michigan,whentherailroadbypassedMilanin1854,buthislifetherewasbittersweet.HesoldcandyandnewspapersontrainsrunningfromPortHurontoDetroit,andhesoldvegetablestosupplementhisincome.ThisbeganEdison'slongstreakofentrepreneurialventuresashediscoveredhistalentsasabusinessman.Thesetalentseventuallyledhimtofound14companies,includingGeneralElectric,whichisstillinexistenceasoneofthelargestpubliclytradedcompaniesintheworld
