　　AttheendoftheZhouDynasty,theareawenowknowasChinahadfallenintoastateoffragmentationandconflict.WhiletheZhoudynastyhadruledforseveralcenturies,severalotherstates,originallyfeudaldomains,triedtocarveouttheirownkingdoms.ThestateofQinwouldeventuallyemergethevictorandunifyallofChinaunderoneruleforthefirsttimeinhistory.

　　QuYuanservedasministertotheZhouEmperor.Awiseandarticulateman,hewaslovedbythecommonpeople.Hedidmuchtofightagainsttherampantcorruptionthatplaguedthecourt--therebyearningtheenvyandfearofotherofficials.Therefore,whenheurgedtheemperortoavoidconflictwiththeQinKingdom,theofficialspressuredtheEmperortohavehimremovedfromservice.Inexile,hetraveled,taughtandwroteforseveralyears.HearingthattheZhouhadbeendefeatedbytheQin,hefellintodespairandthrewhimselfintotheMilouRiver.Hislastpoemreads:

　　ManyaheavysighIhaveinmydespair,GrievingthatIwasborninsuchanunluckytime.Iyokedateamofjadedragonstoaphoenixchariot,Andwaitedforthewindtocome,tosouruponmyjourneyAshewassolovedbythepeople,fishermenrushedoutinlongboats,beatingdrumstoscarethefishaway,andthrowingzongziintothewatertofeedbraverfishsothattheywouldnoteatQuYuan'sbody.
