ANewYorkCitycarpenternamedPeterMcGuireiscreditedforcomingupwiththeideaforLaborDay.In1872,afterworkingmanyhoursunderpoorconditionsMcGuirerallied100000workerstogoonstrike.TheworkersmarchedthroughthestreetsofNewYorkCity,demandingabetterworkenvironment.McGuirespentadecadefightingforworkers’rights.In1882,heproposedtheideatocreateaspecialholidayforworkers.OnTuesday,September5,1882.morethan10000workershitthestreetsofNewYorkCityforthefirsteverLaborDayparade.TwoyearslaterthecelebrationwasmovedtothefirstMondayinSeptember.Andin1894,CongresspassedalawmakingLaborDayanationalholiday.
