　　ThemetalstructureoftheEiffelTowerweighs7,300tonneswhiletheentirestructureincludingnon-metalcomponentsisapproximately10,000tonnes.Dependingontheambienttemperature,thetopofthetowermayshiftawayfromthesunbyupto18cm(7in)becauseofthermalexpansionofthemetalonthesidefacingthesun.Thetoweralsosways6–7cm(2–3in)inthewind.[3]Asdemonstrationoftheeconomyofdesign,ifthe7300tonnesofthemetalstructureweremelteddownitwouldfillthe125metersquarebasetoadepthofonly6cm(2.36in),assumingadensityofthemetaltobe7.8tonnespercubicmeter.Thetowerhasamasslessthanthemassoftheaircontainedinacylinderofthesamedimensions,[7]thatis324metershighand88.3metersinradius.Theweightofthetoweris10,100tonnescomparedto10,265tonnesofair.

　　Thefirstandsecondlevelsareaccessiblebystairwaysandlifts.Aticketboothatthesouthtowerbasesellsticketstoaccessthestairswhichbeginatthatlocation.Atthefirstplatformthestairscontinueupfromtheeasttowerandthethirdlevelsummitisonlyaccessiblebylift.Fromthefirstorsecondplatformthestairsareopenforanyonetoascendordescendregardlessofwhethertheyhavepurchasedaliftticketorstairticket.Theactualcountofstairsincludes9stepstotheticketboothatthebase,328stepstothefirstlevel,340stepstothesecondleveland18stepstotheliftplatformonthesecondlevel.Whenexitingtheliftatthethirdlevelthereare15morestepstoascendtotheupperobservationplatform.Thestepcountisprintedperiodicallyonthesideofthestairstogiveanindicationofprogressofascent.Themajorityoftheascentallowsforanunhinderedviewoftheareadirectlybeneathandaroundthetoweralthoughsomeshortstretchesofthestairwayareenclosed.

　　Maintenanceofthetowerincludesapplying50to60tonnesofpainteverysevenyearstoprotectitfromrust.Inordertomaintainauniformappearancetoanobserverontheground,threeseparatecolorsofpaintareusedonthetower,withthedarkestonthebottomandthelightestatthetop.Onoccasionthecolourofthepaintischanged;thetoweriscurrentlypaintedashadeofbrownish-grey.[8]Onthefirstfloorthereareinteractiveconsoleshostingapollforthecolourtouseforafuturesessionofpainting.Theco-architectsoftheEiffelTowerareEmileNouguier,MauriceKoechlinandStephenSauvestre.[
