　　Dannywasagoodcarpentertoo,andwemadebroomsoutofbranches,whichwetriedtosellinthevillageshop.Webuiltatreehouse,wherewesmokedourfirstcigar,andIwassick!OnceIslippedonsomedampleaves,fellout,scratchedmyarmsandcuttheheelofmyfoot,sohewashedmywoundsinthestream.Hewasaveryconsiderateboyforsomeonesoyoung.Mymothersimplyscoldedmefortearingmyunderwear.

　　Wewereongoodtermswitheveryoneinthevillage,andweevengaveasalutetothelocalpolicemanashepassedonhisbicycle.Butinourimagination,hewasanenemysoldier,andweweretwospieslookingforsecrets.

　　Itwasthefinestfriendshipanyonecouldhave,andlifeseemedperfect.

　　Andthenattheageof14,hisparentsmovedtoLondon,over400kilometresaway.Thepainwasacute,andIcouldn'tforgiveDannyforleavingme.Ifelthehadbetrayedme.ItwastheworstlossIhaveeverexperienced.
