Histalentwasnotlimitedtoarchitectureandtownplanningbutincludedfurnitureandglasswaredesign.Withhisfirstwife,AinoMariso,hefoundedArtek,acompanywhichcontinuestomarketinnovativefurnishings.
HispassionforpaintingandmeetingPabloPicassodirectlyledtothedevelopmentofhisuniquearchitecturalstyle.Theinfluenceofthecollagetechnique,inventedbyPicassoandGeorgesBraque,becameadominantelementinallofhisworkafterPaimio.Hecollagedthesiteindividualityandthetextureandcolorofmaterialswithlighttocreatearchitecturallandscapesinhisprojects.
ThefinestexampleofthisstyleisVillaMairea.Theexteriorjuxtaposeddiversematerialsanddesignelementssuchassleekcolumns,roughstone,grassroofs,strippedlogsandteakintoanarchitecturalcollage.TheinteriorwasevenmoreradicalandtotallymodernizedNordicClassicism.Aalto'sabstractionofaFinnishforestcombinedtextureandnaturalmaterialstosurroundthevisitorwithtrees.Thespacesofthefreeplanopenedandclosedwithinhisforest,creatinganarrayofvariedplacesthatechoedthelandscapeandcultureofthebuilding'shomeland.
