Throughtheyears,we'vewatchedtechnologygrowlikeachildbuddingintoadulthood:Itstartsoutmostlycryingandpooping,thencrawling,graduallylearningtowalk,andfinallyabletorunataspeedweallwishwecouldkeepupwith.We'veseentechnologyfail,andwe'veseenitsucceed.We'vepokedfunatitwhenitdoesn'tmakesense,andwe'vepraiseditwhenit'sabsolutelybrilliant.We'veyelledatitwhenitrunsoutofpower,andwe'vefixedorreplaceditwhenitgetsrundown.
Wetreattechnologyasafamilymember—evenifthatisalittleco-dependent.Youcan'tblameus,though;it'scertainlymadeaspectsofourliveseasier:We'renolongerforcedtosendlettersthroughthepostalservice,bookvacationsthroughtravelagents,shopinstores,visitthelibraryforresearchmaterial,orwaitforourphotostobedeveloped.Thankstotechnology,alloftheseactivitiescanbeperformedeitherdigitallyoronline.
Atthesametime,though,technologycanmakelifemoreconvoluted—especiallywhensomethingdoesn'tworkrightordoesn'tdowhatit'ssupposedto:Say,forinstance,aGPSdevicetellsyoutoturnthewrongwayonaone-waystreet(yikes!),oracomputererasesallofyourimportantdata(ouch!).
Unfortunately,it'snotalwayseasytounderstandhowaproductorserviceworks,nottomentionwhetherornottoholdoffonadoptingituntilabetter,shinierthingcomesalong.Aperfectexampleistheever-evolvingvideoformat.We'vegonefromBetamaxtoVHStoDVDtoHDDVD/Blu-raytojustBlu-ray(andeverythingin-between,ofcourse).Itcantakeyearsbeforeatechnologycatcheson,andevenmoretimebeforeweseeasignificantpricedrop.
Forthemostpart,however,technologydoesusmoregoodthanharm:It'sreconnecteduswitholdcollegeroommates,helpeduslearnaforeignlanguage,andencouragedustoexercise.Followusaswelookbackathowtechnologyhaschangedourlives—forthebetterandfortheworse—intermsofcommunication,computing,dining,entertainment,andtravel.
