ThreeyearslaterwhenhewaseighteenmyyoungerbrotherdecidedtotakeayearoffafterhisfirstyearinuniversityandtravelthroughtheUnitedStatesandtheCaribbean.Againmymotherwasveryworriedandnoteagertoseemybrotherleaveschoolbutmyfatherencouragedhimandmybrotherhadafascinatingyearworkinghiswayontrainsandshipstoearnpassagetodifferentportsandcitiesanddiscoveringmanyfascinatingplacesandpeople.
ThesekindsofexperiencesareprobablyrareforchildreninmanycountriesbutintheUStheyarefairlycommon.Mostparentsstartpushingtheirchildrenatayoungagetodosmallthingsbythemselves.BythetimetheyhavefinishedhighschoolmanyAmericankidshavealreadyhadpart-timejobstraveledaroundtheUSorothercountriesontheirownselectedtheuniversitytheyplantoattendandmaybeevendecidedontheirfuturecareerandsoon.
