　　QianXuesen,afamousscientistinmodernChina,isamemberofChineseAcademyofSciencesandChineseAcademyofEngineering.HewasbornininHangzhouCityofZhejiangProvinceinDecember1911.QiangraduatedformShanghaiJiaotongUniversityin1934.In1935,hewenttotheUnitedStateforadvancedstudyinMIT(MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology).Afterreceivingmaster'sdegreeinMIT,QianwenttostudyinCaliforniaInstituteofTechnology.In1939,QianreceivedPhDdegreesofbothaerospaceandmathematicsandlefttheschooltobeateacher,aswellasaresearcherstudyingtheappliedmechanicsandrocketandmissiletheories.

　　QianreturnedtoChinain1955.Afterhisreturn,Qianhasservedsuccessivelyasdirector-generalwiththemechanicsinstituteofChineseAcademyofSciences,deputydirector-generalanddirector-generalwiththefifthresearchinstituteoftheStateDefenseMinistry,vicechairmanwiththeSeventhDesignandResearchInstituteTheMinistryofMachineryIndustry,deputydirector-generalwiththeCommissionofScience,TechnologyandIndustryforNationalDefense,presidentwiththe3rdChinaAssociationforScienceandTechnology,vicepresidentwiththe6thtothe8thChinesePeople'sPoliticalConsultativeConference(CPPCC).Currently,QianistheseniorconsultantwiththeCommissionofScienceandTechnologyoftheGeneralEquipmentMinistryofthePeople'sLiberationArmy,honorarypresidentwithChinaAssociationforScienceandTechnology.In1957,QianwonthefirstprizeofthenaturalsciencebyChineseAcademyofSciences,in1979,theoutstandingalumnusprizebyCaliforniaInstituteofTechnology,in1985,firstprizeofnationaladvancedtechnologyawards,in1989,thetitleof"World'sCelebrityforSciencesandEngineering",andin1991,China'soutstandingscientistwithoutstandingachievementsandthenation'sfirst-grademedalforheroicmodels.

　　In1956,Qianputforward"ProposalontheDevelopmentofChina'sAviationIndustryforNationalDefense"andassistedZhouEnlai,thethenpremiere,andMarshalNieRongzhengtopreparetheestablishmentofChina'sfirstmissileandrocketR&Dstructure,theFifthResearchInstituteofStateMinistryofDefense.InOctober1956,Qianassumedofficeofdirector-generalwiththefifthresearchinstitute.Henceforth,QianhaslongbeeninchargeofthechieftechnologicalofficerwiththeR&DofChina'smissile,rocketandspacecraft,andhascontributedgreatlytotheestablishmentanddevelopmentofChina'smissile,rocketandspacecraftundertakings.QianisaforerunnerpioneeringthedevelopmentofChina'saerospacescienceandtechnology.Hehasbeenhonoredas"FatherofChina'sMissile".
