Theappleisthepomaceousfruitoftheappletree,speciesMalusdomesticaintherosefamilyRosaceae.Itisoneofthemostwidelycultivatedtreefruits.Thetreeissmallanddeciduous,reaching5-12mtall,withabroad,oftendenselytwiggycrown.Theleavesarealternatelyarrangedsimpleovals5-12cmlongand3-6cmbroadona2-5cmpetiolewithanacutetip,serratedmarginandaslightlydownyunderside.Flowersareproducedinspringsimultaneouswiththebuddingoftheleaves.Theflowersarewhite,fivepetaled,2.5-3.5cmindiameter,whitewithapinktingethatgraduallyfades.Thefruitmaturesinautumn,andistypically5-9cmdiameter(rarelyupto15cm).Thecentreofthefruitcontainsfivecarpelsarrangedinafive-pointstar,eachcarpelcontainingonetothreeseeds.
