Forover300years,fromthe31styearofthereignofEmperiorWanli,MingDynasty(1603),"AnAccountoftheEasternBarbarians"(《东番记》),writtenbyChen-di(陈第),hasbeenaliterarytermforhistoricalreferenceonmanyaccounts.Amongstthesereferences,"BequeathtothecoastalFujian"(《闽海赠言》)hasquotedthewholeoriginaltext,whileotherquotesgiveanaccountofthebell-giftanecdote.Thus,itcanbeseenthatthebell-giftisanimportantanecdotein"AnAccountoftheEasternBarbarians".However,itissaidintheanecdote,"leftabellforPasaiasagiftforwearingaroundtheneck,likedogs".Itleavessomuchroomforinterpretation-whetherthebellgiftismeanttobedemeaningful,treatingPasailikeapetdog.Therefore,sincetheMingDynasty,manyscholarshavedoubtsaboutthe"dog"referenceandchosentoavoidinterpretingsame.Whilethispaperpresentsthefindingsofthisanecdote,itreviewsZheng-he'smissiontoresolvetheterritorialdisputeswithJapanandtosubduetheeasternbarbarians.Thispaperprovidesforanin-depthexaminationoftheanecdoteanditscontroversy-whetherleavingthebell-giftafterfailingtomeetwithPasaihasanyrealclaim,whetherthebell-giftsignifiesa"name-calling"insult,whetherthenamingof"dogcountry"and"showinghostileattitude"hasanyrealevidence.
