AbrahamLincolnwasborninalogcabininHardinCounty,Kentucky,onFebruary12th,1809.ThesonofThomasLincoln,afrontiersmanwhoseownfatherhadbeenkilledbyNativeAmericans,theyearsleadinguptoAbraham'sadulthoodweremarredbypoverty.Hismother,Nancy,diedof"milksickness"whenAbrahamwasten,andthefamilymovedtoIndiana.Theyearafter,ThomasLincolnmarriedSarahBushJohnston,whoencouragedAbraham'seducation.Thoughhehadlittleformalschooling,hecouldreadandwrite.In1830,whenAbrahamwastwenty-oneyearsold,hisfamilymovedagain,thistimetoIllinois,andAbrahamdecidedtogohisownway.
AbrahamjoinedtheIllinoismilitiaduringtheBlackHawkWar.In1832,heranandwasdefeatedforIllinoisStateLegislature,butin1834,atagetwenty-four,heranagainandwaselectedasaWhigandservedforfourterms.Afterreceivinghislawlicensein1836,LincolnmarriedMaryToddonNovember4th,1842.In1847,LincolnwaselectedtoandservedonetermintheU.S.HouseofRepresentatives.In1856,LincolnchangedhispoliticalalliancetotheRepublicanParty,butlostaSenateelectiontoDemocraticSenatorStephenA.Douglas.By1860,Lincolnwasawell-knownpresidentialcandidate.HewasinauguratedinMarchof1861asthesixteenthPresidentoftheUnitedStates.
During1861,southernstatesweretryingtosecedefromtheUnionoftheUnitedStatesandformtheirowncountry.Lincoln,thoughagainsttheseparation,madeclearinhisinauguraladdressthatheheldnomalicetowardtheSouth:"Thereneedbenoblood-shedorviolence,andthereshallbenoneunlessitbeforceduponthenationalauthority.Thepowerconfidedtomewillbeusedtohold,occupy,andpossessthepropertyandplacesbelongingtothegovernment,andtocollectthedutiesandimposts;butbeyondwhatmaybenecessaryfortheseobjects,therewillbenoinvasion,nousingofforceagainstoramongthepeopleanywhere."OnApril12th,1861,theConfederatesopenedfireonFortSumterinCharleston,andtheCivilWarbegan.Twoyearslater,onJanuary1st,1863,LincolnissuedtheEmancipationProclamation,adeclarationthatstatedthat"allslavesinStatesorpartsofStatestheninrebellion"werefree.OnApril9th,1865,GeneralLeesurrenderedtoGeneralGrantatAppomattox,endingthewar.

OnApril14th,1865atFord'sTheatreinWashington,D.C.,AbrahamLincolnwasshotbyJohnWilkes-Booth.HediedonApril15thfromthewound.Thoughheneverauthoredanybooks,Lincoln'sGettysburgAddress,givenonNovember19th,1863,isoneofthebest-knownspeechesofanydecade."Fourscoreandsevenyearsagoourfathersbroughtforthonthiscontinent,anewnation,conceivedinLiberty,anddedicatedtothepropositionthatallmenarecreatedequal.Nowweareengagedinagreatcivilwar,testingwhetherthatnation,oranynationsoconceivedandsodedicated,canlongendure.Wearemetonagreatbattle-fieldofthatwar.Wehavecometodedicateaportionofthatfield,asafinalrestingplaceforthosewhoheregavetheirlivesthatthatnationmightlive.Itisaltogetherfittingandproperthatweshoulddothis."
