JohnSeldeninTitlesofHonour,(1614),discussingthetitle"gentleman",speaksof"ourEnglishuseofit"as"convertiblewithnobilis"(anambiguousword,like'noble'meaningelevatedeitherbyrankorbypersonalqualities)anddescribesinconnectionwithittheformsofennoblinginvariousEuropeancountries.
Toadegree,"gentleman"signifiedamanwhodidnotneedtowork,andthetermwasparticularlyusedofthosewhocouldnotclaimnobilityoreventherankofesquire.Wideningfurther,itbecameapolitenessforallmen,asinthephrase"LadiesandGentlemen,..."andthiswasthenused(oftenwiththeabbreviationGents)toindicatewheremencouldfindalavatory,withouttheneedtoindicatepreciselywhatwasbeingdescribed.
Inmodernspeech,thetermisusuallydemocratisedsoastoincludeanymanofgood,courteousconduct,oreventoallmen(asinindicationsofgender-separatedfacilities).
