ThatoasistodayisknownasXishuangBanna,abeautifulplaceinthesouthernpartofYunnanProvince.Theareaissubtropical,withplentyofrainfall.AccordingtoChinesedocumentsoftheninthcentury,theDaihadafairlywelldevelopedagriculture.Theyusedoxenandelephantstotilltheland,grewlotsofriceandhadanextensiveirrigationsystem.ButwhenreferringtotheDainationality,peoplethinkaboutwater.Thecustomofwater-splashingisanunforgettableexperiencetomanytourists.AnAmericantourist,whohadnoideaaboutthecustomuntilhevisitedaDaivillage,describeshisexperiencethisway:
