　　Imprisonedforacrimehedidn'tcommit,tornawayfromhisfamilyandhisfiancée,Edmundspends15yearslockedawayinadampprison,mostofwhichisspentlearningfightingandsurvivalskillsfromawizenedoldcriminal,playedwithgentlehumorbyRichardHarris.Meanwhile,FernandandMercedesmarry(thatalwayshappensinromancenovels)despitethefactthatshenevergotoverherloveofEdmund.TheplotthickenswithEdmund'sescapefromprisonandhissecretreemergenceasthedashing,andwealthy,CountofMonteCristo.

　　Thefightscenesareamazinglyfluid,swordplayseemingtocomenaturallytobothGuyPearceandJimCaviezel.ThefilmalsofeaturesahumorousperformancefromthetalentedLuisGuzmanasamandevotedtotheCount/Edmund.Whilesomeofthelinesusedinboththeprisonscenesandthe"buddy"scenesbetweenGuzmanandCaviezelareabitunbelievable(thereoccasionallyseemstobeatadtoomuchofthenewmillenniuminthewaytheyspeak),mostofthescenesaretruetothetimesandthesceneryandsetsareauthenticallybreathtaking.
