　　delivershimtotheGothamCitypolice,whereLauagreestotestify

　　againstthemob.Inretaliation,themobstershiretheJokertokill

　　BatmanandLau.TheJokerissuesanultimatumtoGotham,stating

　　thatifBatmandoesnotrevealhisidentitytothepublic,people

　　hospitalandconvincesDenttoexactrevengeonthecorruptcopsand

　　DentgoesonapersonalvendettaconfrontingMaroniandthecorrupt

　　copsonebyone,decidingtheirfateswiththeflipofacoin.The

　　JokerannouncestothepublicthatanyoneleftinGothamat

　　nightfallwillbesubjecttohisrule.Authoritiesbeginevacuating

　　peoplebyferry.TheJokerplacesexplosivesontwooftheferries—

　　oneferrywithconvicts,theotherwithcivilians—tellingthe

　　passengerstheonlywaytosavethemselvesistotriggerthe

　　explosivesontheotherferry;otherwise,hewilldestroybothat

　　midnight.
